21.02.2016 - The New State Pension

The rules around the State Pension are changing dramatically with effect from 6th April 2016. The new rules will affect all those reaching retirement age on or after that date – that means most of us that are currently working.

Under the new regime you will need a minimum of ten years National Insurance contributions to qualify for any state pension and thirty five years contributions to qualify for the full amount. However this is a simplistic view only and you should check your own National Insurance record to see what contributions you have on record. In particular those individuals that have been part of a final salary pension scheme and/or contracted out of SERPS at any point might find they now have a problem. Under the new scheme they may receive a lesser state pension as they have paid lower National Insurance Contributions in the past.

The key is to check your NIC record and find out what contributions you have made. Then speak with an Advisor to find out what is the best action to take. Don’t put off looking into your position – every year that passes will have a big impact later.

The National Living Wage

The National Living Wage is now law. If you have staff aged over 25 years and they are not in the first year of an apprenticeship they are now entitled to a rate of pay in the sum of £7.20 per hour.

You need to carry out a review of your payroll to make sure that you are complying with the new rules and also don't forget that staff aged under 25 are still entitled to the National Minimum Wage so we recommend a monthly review to ensure all staff are being paid at the appropriate - and legal - rate.

If you need help with payroll compliance please give us a call to discuss your requirements.
